The long-awaited OTT release of the Malayalam fantasy-action blockbuster Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra is finally here. After breaking box-office records and becoming the highest-grossing film in Kerala’s history, the film is set to premiere digitally on October 31, 2025, exclusively on Jio Hotstar.

Starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, and directed by Dominic Arun, this visually rich fantasy-drama will be available in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Bengali. The digital release marks a new chapter in Malayalam cinema’s expansion into the national and global streaming space.

A Record-Breaking Run

During its theatrical run, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra created history by grossing over ₹300 crore worldwide, making it Kerala’s highest-earning film ever. Its blend of folklore, fantasy, and emotional depth drew audiences across demographics, setting new standards for regional cinema.

The film’s success has been credited to its fresh take on mythic storytelling. Director Dominic Arun, known for Tharangam, combined elements of folklore and mysticism to craft a modern legend. The story centers on Chandra, a mysterious woman who encounters three aimless young men and a ruthless police officer. Despite being warned to remain hidden, she becomes a symbol of defiance and justice when she stands up against tyranny.

A Blend of Myth and Humanity

At its heart, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra explores how myths mirror real human emotions and struggles. The narrative balances supernatural elements with grounded, relatable character arcs.

Kalyani Priyadarshan delivers one of her most compelling performances, portraying Chandra with intensity and grace. Critics have praised her ability to combine power and vulnerability, giving the character a timeless resonance. Naslen, playing one of the young men whose fate intertwines with Chandra’s, impresses with his natural performance and effortless dialogue delivery.

Supporting performances by Sandy as the menacing cop Nachiyappa and veteran actor Vijayaraghavan add depth to the narrative. Vijayaraghavan’s storytelling scene, where he recounts Chandra’s origins, is considered one of the most hauntingly beautiful moments of the film.

Critical Reception

Critics highlighted the film’s ambition and visual storytelling. Reviewers noted how the film grounds its supernatural premise in human emotion and authenticity. The cinematography and music were also lauded for enhancing the otherworldly atmosphere.

The film’s opening quote — “All legends have an element of truth” — perfectly encapsulates its theme: the intertwining of myth and reality.

OTT Premiere Details

Following its extended theatrical run, the makers have now confirmed that Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra will stream on Jio Hotstar from October 31. The film’s availability in six Indian languages will allow a diverse audience to experience its narrative richness and visual grandeur.

This release strategy reflects the growing importance of multilingual distribution in Indian cinema. By offering dubbed versions across languages, the film expands its reach beyond Kerala, inviting a broader national audience to engage with regional storytelling on a global platform.

Sequel Already in the Works

The success of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra has laid the foundation for a cinematic universe. The sequel, Lokah Chapter 2, was officially announced in September 2025 and will star Tovino Thomas in the lead role. A teaser for the sequel was released recently, further fueling excitement among fans.

This planned franchise is expected to explore interconnected mythological narratives, much like global cinematic universes, but deeply rooted in Indian folklore and culture.

A Turning Point for Malayalam Cinema

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra represents a milestone for the Malayalam film industry. Its massive commercial success, coupled with critical acclaim, has demonstrated that regional films can achieve blockbuster status without compromising artistic depth.

The film’s entry into the digital space is expected to attract new viewers who missed its theatrical run, as well as international audiences seeking authentic Indian fantasy storytelling.
