Imtiaz Ali's latest directorial venture Main Vaapas Aaunga has opened to a modest start at the Indian box office, collecting Rs 1.15 crore nett on its first day in theatres. Despite featuring a powerful cast and an emotionally driven storyline, the film witnessed a slow opening as it began its theatrical journey across the country.
According to early box office estimates, the film generated an India gross collection of approximately Rs 1.38 crore on its opening day. Released across 2,302 shows nationwide, the movie recorded an overall occupancy rate of 12.22 percent. While morning shows started on a low note, audience turnout gradually improved during evening and night screenings.
Among major cities, Chennai emerged as the strongest market for the film with the highest occupancy percentage, followed by Hyderabad. However, several other centres reported limited audience footfall, reflecting the challenges faced by content-driven films in attracting large opening-day crowds.
The film tells the emotional story of an elderly man longing to return to his ancestral home in Sargodha, now located in Pakistan. Through themes of memory, displacement, identity and family bonds, the narrative explores the lasting emotional impact of Partition across generations.
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah plays the central character, portraying a patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Director Imtiaz Ali recently revealed that the role demanded an intense physical and emotional transformation. The actor spent hours in makeup and prosthetics every day and remained bedridden for most of the film's shooting schedule.
Alongside Naseeruddin Shah, the film features Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh in important roles. Their performances contribute to a story that moves between historical events and present-day realities, creating a deeply personal journey shaped by loss, remembrance and hope.
Industry observers believe positive word-of-mouth and strong critical appreciation could help the film gain momentum over the weekend. With its emotional storytelling and acclaimed cast, Main Vaapas Aaunga will now rely on audience recommendations to strengthen its box office performance in the coming days.
