Malaysia's Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling Challenge Looms

Malaysia's Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling Challenge Looms

Post by : Shakul

The electric vehicle sector in Malaysia is experiencing remarkable growth, fueled by rising fuel prices, government incentives, and heightened environmental awareness that is persuading consumers to embrace EVs. Each month, the nation sees thousands of new electric cars being registered, as manufacturers enhance their offerings to meet local demand.

Recent statistics from the Road Transport Department reveal that approximately 5,900 electric vehicles were registered just in April 2026, indicating a substantial year-over-year increase. Local manufacturers like Proton and Perodua are now entering the EV market, speeding up adoption alongside global players such as BYD, Tesla, Chery, and Zeekr.

While the pivot to cleaner transportation is beneficial in reducing carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels, experts are ringing the alarm about an impending challenge—how to manage and recycle EV batteries once they are no longer usable.

The Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute estimates that nearly 900,000 EV batteries might need recycling or disposal by 2050. Most lithium-ion batteries are projected to last around eight years before performance starts to deteriorate. Environmental experts warn that improper disposal of these batteries poses significant pollution and health threats due to their hazardous components and heavy metals.

Industry leaders assert that Malaysia is already taking steps to address future battery waste. The Department of Environment has put regulations in place for handling hazardous battery materials, while efforts to expand licensed recycling centres and Authorised Automotive Treatment Facilities are underway, aiming to ensure the responsible processing of used EV components.

Additionally, the Malaysian government is enhancing circular economy initiatives through the National Automotive Policy and the National Remanufacturing Policy, which are designed to boost recycling rates, encourage green technology investment, and establish Malaysia as a regional leader in sustainable automotive recycling and battery recovery.

Several enterprises are investing significantly in battery recycling innovations. For example, Econili Battery New Energy, a company based in Perak, has launched a large-scale EV battery recycling facility capable of extracting valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel from used units, which can subsequently be reused in new battery manufacturing.

Experts suggest that used EV batteries still possess substantial value after they are no longer vehicle-compatible. Many can be repurposed into Battery Energy Storage Systems for electricity storage in homes, businesses, and solar energy projects. Research indicates that these second-life batteries could remain functional for an additional 10 to 20 years in stationary storage applications before they need complete recycling.

Institutions like Universiti Malaya and BMW Group Malaysia are investigating second-life battery technology aimed at rural electrification and sustainable energy solutions. Researchers believe that such solutions could help mitigate diesel reliance in rural areas while prolonging battery lifespan and minimizing environmental waste.

Despite these advancements, industry analysts warn that battery recycling remains cost-prohibitive and technologically complicated. Experts argue that Malaysia requires enhanced infrastructure, more substantial investments, and a skilled workforce to effectively manage future EV battery waste as electric vehicle adoption continues to surge across the nation.
