Violent Assault on Palestinian Farmer by Masked Settlers in Turmus Ayya

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A shocking incident unfolded in Turmus Ayya, situated in the central West Bank, where a 55-year-old Palestinian woman named Afaf Abu Alia, also referred to as Umm Saleh, sustained critical injuries following an assault by masked Israeli settlers. The attack, which involved severe blows from a wooden stick, was recorded by US journalist Jasper Nathaniel, showcasing the brutality of the assailant as he struck Alia on the head repeatedly.

Witness accounts reveal that the young male settler rendered her unconscious and persisted in his assault even after she fell to the ground. Swift action was taken to transport her to a local hospital, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit due to a significant brain hemorrhage. Additionally, two bystanders, including a Palestinian and a foreign humanitarian volunteer present during the harvest, also suffered injuries, underscoring the precarious situation faced by those involved in the harvest.

This assault has evoked widespread outrage globally. Nathaniel, the journalist who captured the footage, has accused the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) of facilitating an ambush by settlers and subsequently not intervening as violence erupted. In contrast, the IDF has claimed that their personnel acted to disperse the altercation, condemning violence while stressing their responsibility to ensure order. However, the lack of arrests raises troubling questions about the accountability for such attacks in the West Bank.

International human rights advocates have condemned the incident. Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Palestine, noted the alarming frequency of assaults on Palestinians during the olive harvest season. She criticized the inaction of Israeli authorities on social media, pointing to the ethical obligation of Israeli citizens to speak out against such violence. The incident exemplifies the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinian farmers, who often encounter harassment from settlers during vital agricultural times.

This distressing attack has amplified global concern regarding the safety of Palestinian farmers in the West Bank, raising pressing questions about human rights and protective measures. As Umm Saleh battles for recovery in the hospital, there is a growing international call for justice and enhanced protections for Palestinian communities.
