Real Madrid clinched a solid 2-0 win against Real Oviedo in La Liga, but the highlight of the night at Santiago Bernabeu was the fans' response to star player Kylian Mbappe. After his return from injury, sections of the crowd voiced their displeasure, loudly booing him during Thursday night's encounter.
Entering the match, the Madrid faithful were already feeling the sting of their recent loss to Barcelona, which had sealed the league title for their rivals. This defeat left them trophy-less for the second season in a row, amplifying the frustration among supporters evident during the clash against the relegation-bound Oviedo.
Gonzalo Garcia, the young forward, provided the breakthrough for Madrid just before halftime, converting a low delivery from Brahim Diaz with ease. Throughout the game, Real maintained dominance on the pitch, even with numerous empty seats in the Bernabeu.
Jude Bellingham later secured the second goal, capitalizing on a pass from Mbappe. He skillfully maneuvered within the box before unleashing a powerful shot that left Oviedo goalkeeper Aaron Escandell with no chance.
Mbappe began the match on the bench as he was recovering from a thigh injury. However, his introduction in the second half elicited a mixture of boos from some fans, who reportedly were irked by his recent trip to Sardinia while sidelined.
After the match, Mbappe acknowledged the fans' criticisms, stating that players must adapt to crowd reactions. He expressed that while the public's frustration may not always be comprehensible, it's crucial to accept it and work on improving performances in challenging situations.
Despite the backlash, Mbappe has had a remarkable season with 41 goals in 41 matches prior to this game. Nonetheless, many supporters feel the squad has shown a lack of effort and consistency in significant fixtures this term.
The atmosphere at the Bernabeu mirrored broader tensions within the club, with some fans displaying banners condemning club president Florentino Perez. Additionally, speculation intensifies around coach Alvaro Arbeloa’s position, with former manager Jose Mourinho being linked to a potential comeback.
In other La Liga results, Girona drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad, slightly improving their relegation outlook, while Valencia and Rayo Vallecano also settled for a 1-1 draw amidst the ongoing relegation battle.
