MBZUAI and MIT Launch AI Collaborative Research Programme

Post by : Mumtaaz Qadiri

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing have launched a new research partnership called the MIT–MBZUAI Collaborative Research Programme. The programme aims to advance artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific discovery, human wellbeing, and environmental health.

Focus Areas of the Programme

The collaboration will focus on three main areas: scientific discovery, human thriving, and the health of the planet. Researchers will explore fundamental AI technologies and their applications to solve important scientific and societal problems.

Joint Research and Leadership

Faculty, students, and research staff from both MBZUAI and MIT will work together on high-impact research projects. Each project will be co-led by a principal investigator from both universities. This ensures that knowledge and expertise from both institutions contribute equally to the research outcomes.

Academic Directors Named

Professor Le Song from MBZUAI and Professor Philip Isola from MIT will serve as academic directors of the programme at their respective institutions. They will oversee the research efforts and ensure smooth collaboration between the two universities.

Goals of the Collaboration

According to Professor Eric Xing, President of MBZUAI, the collaboration aims to push the boundaries of AI research while ensuring responsible application. The programme will focus on improving human health, developing intelligent robotics, and creating sustainable AI solutions that can be scaled globally.

MIT Perspective

Professor Daniel Huttenlocher, Dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to using AI responsibly and inclusively. The programme will allow both institutions to explore new AI applications that benefit society, from healthcare to environmental sustainability.

Impact on Healthcare Innovation

Professor Sami Haddadin, Vice President for Research at MBZUAI, explained that the programme will help build biological AI models of the human body. This will accelerate healthcare research, reduce the need for expensive lab work, and allow faster discovery of medical solutions.

Supporting Global AI Leadership

The collaboration supports the UAE’s mission to become a global hub for AI innovation. By joining forces with MIT, MBZUAI aims to position itself as a leader in responsible, high-impact AI research while contributing to international scientific progress.

Through this partnership, both universities aim to create technologies that not only advance AI science but also have practical applications. The programme will generate knowledge that can improve daily life, enhance human capabilities, and protect the environment.

The MIT–MBZUAI Collaborative Research Programme represents a significant step in global AI research. By combining expertise from two leading institutions, the programme will deliver solutions that are responsible, sustainable, and beneficial for science, society, and the planet.
