Rory McIlroy Plays Smart at India Golf Tournament

Rory McIlroy Plays Smart at India Golf Tournament

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Rory McIlroy, one of the most celebrated golfers in the world, made his long-awaited debut in India at the DP World India Championship in Delhi. On Thursday, the Northern Irish star began his campaign with a confident three-under 69. Playing his first-ever competitive round in India, McIlroy impressed fans by showing a new side to his game — one that focused more on accuracy than raw power.

A New Strategy for a Tough Course

The Delhi Golf Club is unlike the wide and open courses McIlroy is used to. At just under 7,000 yards, the par-72 course is tight, lined with trees, and full of sharp turns. It demands precision more than distance. Known for his 350-yard drives, McIlroy decided to leave his driver behind and rely entirely on his irons. After the round, he joked, “The dog was out of the bag — probably asleep in the locker. There’s just no hole out there to hit it more than 270 off the tee.”

Balancing Accuracy and Patience

The course’s narrow fairways and thick rough tested McIlroy’s patience. Each mistake risked a difficult recovery from the dense vegetation. Despite the challenge, McIlroy stayed composed, managing six birdies and three bogeys across 18 holes. His approach showed that control and discipline could be just as powerful as distance. The strategy helped him stay close to the tournament leaders and set a strong foundation for the days ahead.

Early Leaders Set the Pace

Japan’s Keita Nakajima led the field with a stunning seven-under 65, making eight birdies in a nearly perfect round. Spain’s Jorge Campillo followed closely with a 67, while several others, including Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland, stayed within reach at four-under. With many top players performing well, the championship’s opening day set the stage for a close contest.

McIlroy Reflects on His Performance

McIlroy was pleased with his controlled start, even though he admitted that the Delhi rough created unpredictable situations. “You just have to get the ball in the fairway,” he said. “The rough is unpredictable — you get a lot of fliers.” His comment showed his respect for the course and his understanding that success here would depend on careful planning rather than pure strength.

A Star-Studded Field Competes

The $4 million event has brought together some of the world’s finest golfers. Alongside McIlroy, Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, and Shane Lowry are competing. PGA Tour regulars like Brian Harman and Ben Griffin are also part of the strong field. With such big names, the competition promises exciting golf and close finishes throughout the week.

Eyes on His First Indian Title

Four shots behind the leader, McIlroy remains well within reach of the top. Over the next three rounds, his focus will be on improving accuracy and maintaining consistency. For McIlroy, this tournament is more than just another stop on the tour — it’s a chance to claim his first title on Indian soil. As the competition progresses, his tactical and patient approach may prove to be the key to victory.

Rory McIlroy’s first day in Delhi highlighted the beauty of adapting to different playing conditions. While fans often admire his powerful drives, his performance at the DP World India Championship showed a more strategic side. By trading power for precision, McIlroy demonstrated that in golf, sometimes the smartest player — not just the strongest — walks away with the win.
