Medical Emergency on Singapore Airlines: Passenger Dies Mid-Flight

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On November 5, a somber event unfolded aboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ378, en route from Singapore to Milan, when a passenger suffering from liver cancer collapsed during the journey. Despite the dedicated efforts of three doctors and the cabin crew, attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Dr. Desmond Wai, a gastroenterologist from Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre, was also on the flight with family when the crew urgently requested medical help. He did not hesitate to respond.

“As a physician, it's my moral obligation to assist,” commented Dr. Wai.

Upon reaching the scene, he discovered a middle-aged man unconscious on the floor, as the cabin crew had already brought in an automated external defibrillator (AED) and emergency supplies. Together with two other doctors, Dr. Wai quickly began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and utilized the AED in a desperate attempt to revive the passenger.

For almost half an hour, they persevered in their lifesaving efforts. Regrettably, without any signs of recovery, Dr. Wai and his colleagues faced the tough choice to cease resuscitation attempts.

“We witnessed no improvement and recommended the crew to stop. It’s unfortunate that we could not succeed, but that’s the reality we face in this profession,” Dr. Wai reflected.

The passenger's wife, who accompanied him, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the medical team, tearfully saying, “Thank you, doctor, for your efforts.”

Following the landing, the doctors provided statements to local authorities, in accordance with aviation regulations for onboard fatalities. Singapore Airlines extended condolences to the grieving family and expressed gratitude to the medical professionals who responded during the crisis.

Dr. Wai also urged fellow medical practitioners to be ready to help in emergencies, emphasizing that their responsibilities extend beyond the confines of hospitals.
