42 Umrah Pilgrims, Including Many Indians, Die in Fatal Medina Bus Accident

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A catastrophic incident in Saudi Arabia claimed the lives of at least 42 individuals early Monday when a bus filled with Umrah pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker near Mufrihat, just outside Medina. Reports indicate that a significant number of the victims were Indian nationals hailing from Hyderabad, Telangana, drawing widespread attention and concern.

The bus was making its way from Mecca to Medina when the accident occurred around 1:30 am IST, according to local Saudi media coverage. The passengers had just completed their Umrah rituals and were headed to Medina as part of their spiritual journey.

Bus Engulfed in Flames

According to Gulf News, many of the pilgrims were asleep during the crash, leaving them with little opportunity to escape. The catastrophic impact ignited a fierce blaze, rendering the bus completely charred in a matter of minutes.

Rescue teams were dispatched promptly; however, they faced challenges in identifying victims due to the extent of the bus's destruction. Early reports suggest the toll includes 11 women and 10 children amidst those deceased, but official confirmations are still pending.

One survivor, Mohd Abdul Shoiab, was rescued and taken to a local hospital, although his current health status is unknown.

Most Victims Hailing from Telangana

Several victims had arranged their pilgrimages through two agencies in Hyderabad—Al-Meena Hajj and Umrah Travels. Their families are grappling with shock as details of the tragedy unfold.

The Telangana government acted swiftly, establishing contact with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed authorities to coordinate with embassy officials and acquire accurate information about the victims. A control room has been established at the Telangana Secretariat to assist affected families.

Indian Embassy Offers Support

The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has set up a 24/7 emergency control room to offer assistance and work with Saudi officials to identify victims, support survivors, and ensure the repatriation of deceased individuals to India.

Community Leaders Express Condolences

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed that all 42 individuals on the bus were Indian nationals. He is in contact with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission in Riyadh, who is gathering necessary details. Owaisi has urged the central government to expedite the return of the bodies and provide urgent medical support to the injured.

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conveyed deep sorrow via X, stating:
"Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are offering full support to Indian nationals and families impacted by this incident. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved. Wishing for a swift recovery for those injured."

A Heart-Wrenching Tragedy for Families Awaiting Return

What was intended as a sacred spiritual journey has culminated in profound sadness. Families from Hyderabad and other regions of India are anxiously awaiting updates as authorities endeavor to confirm identities and facilitate repatriation. An investigation into the events surrounding the collision is underway, but the magnitude of this tragedy has already evoked sorrow across communities in India and beyond.
