Canadian actor Michael J. Fox has opened up about his experiences living with Parkinson’s disease and his steadfast dedication to the Parkinson’s community as he celebrates the 25th anniversary of his charitable foundation. At 64, Fox shared insights during a recent interview, touching on his personal journey and the significant influence of his advocacy.
Initially diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29, Fox kept his diagnosis private for seven years, taking time to come to terms with it before going public. This progressive disorder of the central nervous system mainly affects motor functions, leading to symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and slow movement. Although there is currently no cure, treatments aim to alleviate symptoms. The complications associated with Parkinson’s, including falls and pneumonia, can pose life-threatening risks.
In 2000, Fox launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which focuses on funding research for a cure and enhancing therapies for those affected by the disease. To date, the foundation has raised over $2.5 billion. Fox clarified that his mission is not to gain personal accolades, but to support families impacted by Parkinson’s and facilitate significant advancements in research and care.
Reflecting on his acting career, Fox mentioned the demanding schedules of filming for Family Ties and Back to the Future. He described the challenge of surviving on limited sleep for months while juggling multiple roles, maintaining his energy during his 23rd year.
Despite the hardships posed by Parkinson’s, including various injuries and the discovery of a benign spinal tumor, Fox remains candid about his experience, referring to the disease as a “gift that keeps on taking.” He stresses the importance of positivity and gratitude as essential coping strategies in daily life.
Although he retired from acting in 2020, Fox has recently confirmed a guest appearance in the 2026 episode of the series Shrinking. In recognition of his philanthropic contributions, he was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in November 2023, an honorary Oscar that honors individuals for their charitable impacts on the film industry.
Through his decades of advocacy, Fox stands as a prominent figure in raising Parkinson’s awareness. He utilizes his influence to diminish stigma and cultivate hope for the millions affected globally. The ongoing success of his foundation highlights the gravity of the disease's effects and the potential for research to enhance the lives of patients and their families.
