Mild 3.6 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Dima Hasao in Assam

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck Assam's Dima Hasao district on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by seismic authorities. The tremor hit at approximately 12:40 pm IST, originating from a depth of around 30 kilometers. Its epicenter was located at latitude 25.19° N and longitude 92.92° E in a hill area.

Initial reports from local officials indicate no injuries or property damage thus far. Residents felt the quake, but its effects are considered minor due to the quake's depth and isolation.

Located in northeastern India, Assam is in proximity to various seismic zones and experiences several minor to moderate earthquakes regularly. Experts note that such tremors highlight the ongoing risk of seismic activity in the region, necessitating continual readiness.

This occurrence raises concerns regarding infrastructure strength in these hilly and remote locations, where proper building codes and early warning systems are crucial to reducing risk. Local disaster response teams are on standby to evaluate the situation further and check for any overlooked damages.

Residents of Dima Hasao district are advised to stay vigilant and report any noticeable changes or damages to homes and public structures. A comprehensive assessment by geological and seismic experts is anticipated in the upcoming days.
