Japan's ambition for a successful run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has taken a significant hit as star winger Kaoru Mitoma has been excluded from the national team due to a hamstring injury. Head coach Hajime Moriyasu confirmed this news while unveiling the final squad.
Mitoma, currently with Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League, sustained the injury during a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Following assessments by the medical team, it was concluded that he would be unable to recover in time for the upcoming tournament.
The 28-year-old is regarded as one of Japan's leading attacking figures. Noted for his speed, creativity, and dribbling abilities, Mitoma has emerged as a crucial player for his club and national team over recent years. His absence is regarded as a significant setback for Japan as they prepare for the world’s most prestigious football event.
Coach Moriyasu expressed that the decision to omit Mitoma was challenging, acknowledging his role as a “major presence” in the squad. However, he believes the remaining players have sufficient qualities to compete effectively.
Japan approaches the 2026 FIFA World Cup with high anticipations, following commendable showings in previous international fixtures. The team has reached the Round of 16 in the last two World Cups, earning a reputation for their disciplined and vigorous style of play.
Japan has been grouped with the Netherlands, Sweden, and Tunisia. Their inaugural match will take place against the Netherlands on June 14 in the United States.
Along with Mitoma, Monaco’s Takumi Minamino also missed out on selection due to injuries. On a positive note, defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is back in the lineup reliving supporters after bouts with injuries.
Analysts believe that Mitoma's absence could impede Japan's offensive capabilities, particularly in matches against strong European adversaries. His talent for creating scoring opportunities made him one of the squad’s most formidable players.
Mitoma gained international recognition during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where he played a vital role in Japan's victories over illustrious teams like Germany and Spain, with his notable assist against Spain being one of the tournament's highlight moments.
Despite this setback, Japan is still equipped with numerous seasoned players who can shoulder the team’s responsibilities. With the leadership of captain Wataru Endo, defender Tomiyasu, and emerging young offensive players, the team aims to rally during the competition.
Injuries can be among the toughest adversities in professional sports, and missing out on the World Cup brings a particular pang, given the rarity of the event occurring every four years. For Mitoma, the timing poses a considerable disappointment, personally and professionally.
Nonetheless, many supporters remain optimistic that Japan will continue to build on its recent advancements on the global stage. The team is known for its collaboration, discipline, and determination—qualities that could enable them to continue competing, even in the absence of one of their standout players.
