Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for South Africa on Friday, embarking on a three-day trip to participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. As the largest city and economic heartbeat of South Africa, Johannesburg will host the summit themed around “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability.” This marks the fourth consecutive G20 summit being hosted in the Global South.
Significantly, this year's summit occurs without leaders from the United States and China. US President has opted out, raising concerns about the perceived discrimination against South Africa’s Afrikaner white minority. Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s absence may be a strategic reduction in his international engagements.
Throughout the summit, PM Modi is expected to participate in all three sessions, centering his discussions on inclusive economic growth, climate resilience, and advancements in artificial intelligence. His address will reflect India’s viewpoint on critical matters, including trade, development financing, disaster risk reduction, climate change, energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, and the future of work.
In addition, PM Modi plans to engage in bilateral discussions with several leaders during the summit, as well as attend the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by South Africa.
Highlighting the summit’s significance, PM Modi described his visit as “particularly special” due to it being the first G20 meeting in Africa. He reiterated that India’s philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” and “One Earth, One Family, One Future” will be central to India’s engagements in the discussions.
A landmark achievement of India's G20 presidency in 2023 was the African Union's inclusion as a G20 member, reinforcing Africa's role in critical global economic dialogues.
The summit's agenda is organized around three pivotal topics:
Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth: Addressing economies, trade, development financing, and debt concerns.
A Resilient World: Focusing on disaster risk reduction, climate change, energy transitions, and food systems.
A Fair and Just Future: Discussing critical minerals, the future of work, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
PM Modi’s active role at the summit underlines India’s significant influence in shaping global policies while fostering collaboration among emerging economies and developing nations.
