In a thrilling start to the Tour de Hongrie on Wednesday, Colombian cyclist Juan Sebastián Molano from UAE Team Emirates-XRG finished as the runner-up in the opening stage. The stage concluded with a dramatic sprint where Belgian cyclist Tim Merlier from Soudal Quick-Step clinched victory, while Phil Bauhaus from Bahrain Victorious followed in third.
The event kicked off near the iconic Gyula Castle, featuring 112 cyclists from 19 different teams battling it out in this inaugural stage of the five-day race.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG brought a formidable squad with French cyclist Benoît Cosnefroy at the helm, supported by promising Emirati sprinter Mohammed Al Mutaiwei. The team lineup also featured Vegard Stake Laengen, Rui Oliveira, and Adrià Pericas.
This year’s Tour de Hongrie stretches over 836 kilometers divided into five stages. As competitors journey eastward through Hungary, they will encounter increasingly strenuous terrain and technical finishes, setting the stage for potential attacks and breakaways.
The pivotal stage four, moving from Mohács to Pécs, is likely to influence the overall standings significantly. Additionally, the concluding stage into Veszprém may shake up the rankings as the race approaches its finale.
