Mount Semeru, situated in eastern Java, Indonesia, erupted dramatically on Wednesday afternoon, propelling ash and volcanic gases over 13 kilometers (eight miles) high. This eruption has resulted in significant damage to structures, including at least one school, leading authorities to evacuate nearly 190 individuals from the nearby slopes while establishing temporary shelters for hundreds more.
The eruption struck during the afternoon, plunging surrounding regions into a thick darkness. Local residents recounted their experiences as terrifying; Faiz Ramadhani expressed that the atmosphere resembled midnight at just 4 PM. Ash and rock debris buried portions of several homes, with one elementary school suffering total destruction. Nurul Yakin Pribadi, the village chief of Supiturang, conveyed that his home was enveloped in a meter-high accumulation of volcanic debris.
As of Thursday, volcanic activity has lessened but remains variable, according to the Indonesian Geological Agency. Disaster management officials noted that approximately 900 individuals have taken refuge in shelters located in schools, mosques, and community centers. Many have opted to stay overnight in shelters due to the fear and trauma caused by the eruption.
Reports indicate that three individuals have sustained burns, while rescue teams continue to search for hikers stranded at nearby camps. Rudijanto Tjahja Nugraha, the director of Semeru National Park, confirmed that evacuation efforts are still underway to prioritize safety.
Mount Semeru has a notorious past, with its eruption in 2021 resulting in over 50 fatalities and damaging more than 5,000 homes, rendering nearly 10,000 people homeless. Indonesia lies within the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” hosting nearly 130 active volcanoes due to tectonic shifts, leading to frequent volcanic and seismic incidents.
Authorities continue to evaluate the damage while urging residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety directives as the volcanic activity fluctuates.
