Mount Semeru, located in eastern Java, Indonesia, erupted on Wednesday afternoon, launching ash and volcanic gas over 13 kilometres (eight miles) into the atmosphere. This violent eruption damaged homes and at least one educational institution, prompting the evacuation of approximately 190 residents from the volcano's slopes while temporary shelters were established for hundreds more.
The eruption occurred in the early afternoon, plunging nearby areas into a thick darkness. Many locals expressed their fear, with resident Faiz Ramadhani noting that the eruption created a nighttime atmosphere despite it being just 4 PM. The volcanic ash and debris buried some homes, while an elementary school was reported completely destroyed. Supiturang village leader Nurul Yakin Pribadi shared that his house was engulfed by a one-metre-high deposit of volcanic mass.
As of Thursday, volcanic activity had lessened but remained unpredictable, as reported by the Indonesian Geological Agency. Disaster management officials noted that close to 900 individuals were utilizing shelters in schools, mosques, and community buildings. Many people opted to remain in these shelters overnight due to trauma and apprehension stemming from the eruption.
Reports indicated that three individuals sustained burns, and efforts were ongoing to assist hikers stranded near the volcano's campsites. Rudijanto Tjahja Nugraha, head of Semeru National Park, confirmed that evacuations were still in progress to guarantee safety.
Mount Semeru bears a perilous history; its eruption in 2021 resulted in over 50 fatalities and considerable damage, displacing nearly 10,000 residents. Indonesia, part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," has around 130 active volcanoes due to tectonic activity, making the region susceptible to regular volcanic and seismic events.
Authorities are currently assessing the overall damage and are advising residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols as volcanic behavior continues to vary.
