The Muslim World League has strongly condemned and rejected the E1 settlement plan and related settlement activities in occupied East Jerusalem. The organisation issued its statement from Makkah on Friday, August 21, describing the plan as a serious development that it says could affect efforts toward establishing an independent Palestinian state.
The statement was issued by the General Secretariat of the Muslim World League, which said it opposed Israeli settlement policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The organisation also criticised what it described as support for violations and violence by settlers against Palestinians and their property.
According to the Muslim World League, the E1 plan threatens the prospects of an independent Palestinian state and could undermine efforts aimed at achieving a political settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The organisation said settlement activities and other measures that change the geographical and demographic character of the Palestinian territories should be stopped. It argued that such actions are inconsistent with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The Muslim World League called on the international community to take what it described as its legal and moral responsibilities in response to settlement policies and violence. The organisation urged an immediate end to settlement activities and other measures that it says affect the status and character of the occupied Palestinian territory.
The statement comes amid continued international debate over Israeli settlement activity and the future of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. The E1 area has been particularly sensitive because of its location between East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
The Muslim World League said the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state remains a central Palestinian objective. It endorsed the two-state solution and relevant international resolutions as the route toward what it described as a just and lasting peace.
The organisation said international efforts should focus on protecting Palestinian rights and preventing actions that could make a negotiated political settlement more difficult.
The MWL also welcomed a statement issued by the foreign ministers of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Türkiye and Egypt.
According to the MWL, the countries expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and support for their stated right to establish an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. The organisation described their position as support for a two-state framework and international resolutions.
The E1 area east of Jerusalem has long been a sensitive issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Settlement development in the area has generated international concern because of its potential implications for the territorial continuity of a future Palestinian state.
The issue remains part of the wider dispute over settlements, borders, Jerusalem and Palestinian statehood. Different governments and international organisations have taken varying positions on settlement activity and its legal and political implications.
The Muslim World League said settlement policies and violence undermine efforts to achieve peace in the region. It called for international action to prevent further changes to the geographical and demographic situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The latest statement adds to continuing diplomatic pressure surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The issue of settlements remains closely connected to broader discussions over a two-state solution, Palestinian statehood and long-term regional stability.
