Myanmar's Military Detains 1,600 in Major Scam Center Raids Near Thailand

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Myanmar’s military has launched an extensive operation against online scam centers situated along its border with Thailand. From November 18 to 22, authorities apprehended nearly 1,600 foreign nationals in the Shwe Kokko region, infamous for its fraud and illicit gambling activities. This action follows increasing pressure from China, a prominent supporter of Myanmar’s military, to combat the growing internet scams affecting its citizens.

During these operations, the military reported the confiscation of thousands of devices, with nearly 2,900 computers, more than 21,000 mobile phones, 101 Starlink satellite receivers, and numerous routers seized. Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, had recently disabled over 2,500 devices associated with scam activities in this region.

The Shwe Kokko centers are vast compounds employing thousands, including individuals trafficked from abroad. The operations primarily focus on romance and business scams, which are responsible for billions in annual losses. While the military claims these raids target fraud networks, some analysts view it as an attempt to appease international and Chinese stakeholders while safeguarding the military’s financial interests.

Footage revealed officials destroying hundreds of computer monitors and mobile phones as part of the evidence collection. Nonetheless, experts caution that Myanmar’s border regions remain inadequately controlled, which allows scam operations to flourish. The continuing civil unrest since the 2021 coup has further destabilized these areas, turning them into hotspots for illegal activities.

China expresses growing concern, as many victims and perpetrators are from there, applying additional pressure on Myanmar’s military to take action. This crackdown reflects the intricate challenges of addressing extensive cybercrime amid delicate political and social dynamics, balancing local governance, international demands, and economic considerations. The situation remains dynamic as Myanmar’s military pushes forward with its efforts to tackle the online scam issue amidst ongoing turmoil.
