Nail Care Essentials: How to Maintain Strength and Beauty

While many people focus on their skin and hair, nails often receive less attention, yet they are indicators of overall health. Smooth, shiny, and strong nails often mean you're providing your body with essential nutrients. In contrast, brittle, breaking, or dull nails might signal dryness, stress, excessive washing, or vitamin deficiencies.

Daily activities such as using hand sanitizers, household chores, and exposure to harsh soaps or chemicals can gradually weaken nails. However, you don't need resort to costly treatments for nail health. Simple daily habits and good hygiene can lead to naturally beautiful and resilient nails.

Here's a straightforward guide to keeping your nails healthy throughout the year.

1. Maintain Cleanliness and Dryness

Strong nails begin with proper cleanliness. Moisture trapped around or under your nails can lead to infections and weaken them.

Here are simple practices:

  • Thoroughly dry your hands post-wash

  • Refrain from soaking your hands in water for prolonged periods

  • Opt for mild soap and a clean towel

Keeping your nails clean and dry promotes strength and reduces breakage.

2. Daily Moisturizing for Nails and Cuticles

Similar to your skin, nails require consistent moisture. Dry nails are prone to cracking and peeling.

Effective moisturizers include:

  • Coconut oil

  • Almond oil

  • Olive oil

  • Cuticle cream

  • Hand moisturizer

For improved strength and shine, gently massage oil around your nails at night.

3. Break the Nail-Biting Habit

Nail-biting harms the nail bed and can lead to uneven growth and increased infection risk.

To curb this behavior:

  • Try a bitter nail polish

  • Keep nails neatly trimmed

  • Utilize a stress ball or fidget toy

Once the habit is broken, your nails will thrive and appear healthier.

4. Use Gloves While Performing Household Tasks

Chemicals in detergents and cleaning supplies can weaken nails.

Always wear gloves when:

  • Washing dishes

  • Cleaning

  • Doing laundry

  • Gardening

This practice safeguards both your hands and nails.

5. Minimize Use of Harsh Nail Products

Frequent use of gel polishes, acrylics, and strong removers can thin your nails.

Consider these alternatives:

  • Use acetone-free removers

  • Take breaks between manicures

  • Select gentle nail polish brands

Resting your nails helps restore their natural strength.

6. Regular Trimming and Filing

Routine trimming keeps nails tidy and prevents breakage.

Recommended frequency:

  • Every 1 to 2 weeks

File in one direction only—back-and-forth filing can weaken nails.

7. Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet

Your diet significantly impacts nail growth. Certain foods enhance thickness and strength.

Foods that promote nail health include:

  • Eggs (high in biotin)

  • Nuts like almonds and walnuts

  • Vegetables like spinach

  • Dairy products

  • Legumes such as beans

  • Omega-3 rich foods

Healthy nails begin with a nutritious diet.

8. Stay Hydrated

Lack of hydration can result in dry, brittle nails.

Aim for:

  • 7-8 glasses of water daily

Well-hydrated nails look shinier and break less frequently.

9. Avoid Tearing Hangnails

Pulling hangnails can lead to pain and infections.

A safer approach:

  • Trim with sanitized scissors

  • Apply oil or moisturizer afterwards

This minimizes pain and swelling.

10. Monitor Changes in Your Nails

Nail changes can signal health issues.

Be alert for:

  • Discoloration

  • White spots

  • Brittleness

  • Pain around the nail

  • Swelling

Seek medical advice for persistent concerns.

Maintaining great nails doesn’t necessitate expensive salon visits; simple daily habits like cleaning, moisturizing, a nutritious diet, hydration, and nail protection are key.

Healthy nails reflect your overall health. By investing a bit of daily effort, you can achieve smooth, shiny, and healthy nails all year long.
