NATO has announced plans to gradually modify the size and structure of its peacekeeping mission in Kosovo over the coming year, citing improved security conditions and increased capabilities of local security institutions. The decision marks a significant development in one of the alliance’s longest-running international missions, which has operated in Kosovo since 1999 under a United Nations mandate.
The announcement was made by NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, who reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Kosovo. He stated that NATO and the Kosovo Force, commonly known as KFOR, remain fully dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of all communities across the region.
According to NATO, the planned changes reflect growing confidence in Kosovo’s security institutions and the overall improvement of the security environment. Alliance officials believe the current situation provides an opportunity to optimize the size and deployment of peacekeeping forces while maintaining operational effectiveness.
NATO emphasized that the adjustments will be carried out gradually and will be closely linked to conditions on the ground. The alliance stressed that any reduction in troop levels or changes in force positioning will be carefully monitored to ensure regional stability remains protected throughout the transition process.
Officials also made it clear that the changes are not permanent and can be reversed if security circumstances deteriorate. NATO said it will continue assessing developments in Kosovo and the wider Western Balkans region before implementing each phase of the planned adjustments.
The Kosovo Force has played a crucial role in maintaining stability since its deployment following the Kosovo conflict in 1999. Over the years, KFOR has supported peace, security, freedom of movement and cooperation between local institutions and international partners.
The latest announcement highlights NATO’s confidence in Kosovo’s progress while underscoring its continued commitment to regional security. The alliance maintains that peace and stability in the Western Balkans remain strategic priorities and that KFOR will continue to stand ready to respond to any emerging challenges.
