Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a leading figure in Indian independent cinema, has gained recognition for his roles in impactful films like The Lunchbox, Photograph, and Gangs of Wasseypur. In a recent chat, the seasoned actor shared insights about the obstacles faced by indie films in India, where they often struggle to gain footing against commercial blockbusters.
Reflecting on the future of this genre, Nawazuddin commented, “I will continue to support independent films. It’s crucial to maintain a balance with certain mass market films. It would be a loss if independent cinema were to fade away. It must keep being produced... Our classical art forms, including music and dance, haven't been widely accepted due to their complexity.”
The actor remarked that although mainstream cinema is vital to the industry, indie films occupy a distinctive niche, being “classical art forms” aimed at specific audiences. “Creating art for everyone while maintaining artistic integrity is a delicate task. True art hasn’t been crafted for mass consumption,” he elaborated.
Nawazuddin further discussed the benefits of participating in commercial films. He explained that achieving success in mainstream cinema can enhance visibility, which ultimately supports indie projects in garnering audiences. “The primary advantage of starring in big-budget movies is the exposure they provide. Even if small films attract a modest audience, it’s a significant victory. My presence in mainstream projects has increased awareness about me. Most indie films are shown on fewer screens, limiting their audience,” he noted.
Currently, Nawazuddin is being celebrated for his vampire portrayal in Aditya Sarpotdar's horror comedy Thamma, alongside Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. As a part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, this film has been well-received since its Diwali release, earning ₹93 crore at the box office within just four days, signaling a shift towards genre-based appreciation in Indian cinema.
By balancing both independent and mainstream projects, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a strong advocate for niche narratives while also leveraging his star power to elevate the visibility of indie films, affirming that art can harmoniously exist alongside commercial success in modern cinema.
