Nepal's Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, has broadened her interim cabinet, marking a new chapter after the violent protests last month that severely impacted the nation. These protests, driven by the youth's demand for change, resulted in at least 73 fatalities and the resignation of the prior government. Karki, aged 73 and a former chief justice, is now tasked with guiding the Himalayan country towards stability and reform.
On Sunday, President Ram Chandra Paudel swore in two new ministers—Bablu Gupta, a 28-year-old dynamic youth leader and advocate, alongside Dr. Sudha Sharma, a well-regarded health expert and author. The cabinet expansion underscores Karki's determination to incorporate youthful perspectives and skilled professionals into governance.
Gupta, who leads the volunteer initiative 100’s Group, is celebrated for his social endeavors related to food aid and educational support for disadvantaged communities. His new role as Youth and Sports Minister has been positively received, especially among the youth who were at the forefront of the protests in September.
Dr. Sudha Sharma takes on the position of Minister of Health and Population, bringing a wealth of experience in public health and maternal care. She is recognized for her contributions to policy reforms and her advocacy for enhanced healthcare access, earning her a trusted reputation in the realm.
While Karki has put forth two additional names for her 10-member cabinet, those appointments are currently on hold, awaiting further discussions with youth representatives. A source from the presidential office indicated that negotiations are ongoing to finalize the cabinet.
Having stepped into office amid significant unrest, Karki's challenge is profound—she must mend a fractured nation, reestablish faith in leadership, and prepare for national elections set for March 5. Her commitment to "clean governance and unity" resonates powerfully with citizens eager for reform after protracted political turmoil.
The appointments of Gupta and Sharma to the interim government have ignited hope across Nepal. For many, this signals the dawn of a generational shift—an advancement towards a more transparent and inclusive political environment.
