Netanyahu Dismisses Palestinian Statehood Amid Coalition Tensions

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Jerusalem, Nov 17, 2025 – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has reiterated his strong opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, as he faces increasing demands from far-right coalition partners following a controversial U.N. resolution proposal that advocates for Palestinian independence.

This declaration arrives shortly after the U.N. Security Council commenced discussions surrounding a draft resolution that aligns with President Donald Trump’s outline for peace in Gaza. This plan proposes a transitional “Board of Peace” to oversee Gaza's reconstruction and economic revival, with the potential for reforms in the Palestinian Authority to eventually allow for self-determination.

Although the proposal has received support from several U.S. allies and numerous Muslim-majority nations, it has incited ire among Israeli far-right factions. Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have insisted that Netanyahu publicly reject the notion of Palestinian statehood, with Ben-Gvir threatening to exit the coalition if his demands go unmet.

In response, Netanyahu affirmed on Sunday: “Our stance against a Palestinian state in any part of our land remains unchanged. Gaza will be disarmed, whether the process is easy or difficult. I don't require affirmations, tweets, or lectures from anyone.”

Support for Netanyahu's stance was echoed by prominent officials, including Defense Minister Israel Katz and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who voiced their opposition to Palestinian statehood without directly referencing Netanyahu. This far-right pressure poses threats to the stability of Netanyahu's coalition government, particularly as a potential departure could jeopardize his leadership leading into the upcoming elections in October 2026.

Netanyahu had previously shown endorsement for Trump’s peace plan during a September visit to the White House but had notably remained quiet regarding the Palestinian statehood issue until now. Criticism from far-right ministers has mounted over perceived indecisiveness, demanding a clear assertion that no Palestinian state would be established on Israeli territory.

The Gaza conflict, ignited by Hamas’ attacks on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties, exceeding 69,000, alongside extensive devastation in the region. Although a ceasefire was established on October 10, 2025, sporadic violence persists.

Analysts suggest the revived discussion surrounding Palestinian statehood highlights the unstable condition of Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition and the ongoing hurdles in the Middle East peace negotiations. The debate carries significant international consequences as Israel contends with pressures from the U.S., European allies, and Muslim-majority countries calling for a two-state resolution.

As Netanyahu and his administration maintain a resolute stand against Palestinian independence, regional tensions are exacerbated, leaving the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations in a precarious state.
