H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, has officially endorsed the Architectural Identity for road projects in Dubai. This initiative seeks to elevate the urban aesthetic and functionality of the city’s streets, corridors, and roads, ensuring they are both visually engaging and practical.
Aligned with Dubai’s aspiration of becoming a fully integrated, sustainable metropolis, Sheikh Hamdan inspected key developments including the upgrades to the Trade Centre Roundabout and Al Mustaqbal Street. These enhancements encompass seven bridges and three tunnels spanning a total of 6,500 metres, at a projected cost of AED1.3 billion.
These pivotal projects aim to serve high-traffic areas like the Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), Emirates Towers, Museum of the Future, and Downtown Dubai, with expectations of benefiting over one million residents by significantly cutting travel times by 75 percent. An innovative aspect of the Dubai Tunnels initiative is its plan to turn tunnels into cultural hotspots through collaboration with local artists for mural designs, thus enriching the city’s aesthetic flair.
During the site visit to the Trade Centre Roundabout, Sheikh Hamdan received updates from Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Al Tayer highlighted that Dubai’s expansive road network consists of over 25,000 lane-kilometres, catering to more than 3.5 million vehicles every day. The city’s rapid transit development has earned global acclaim, constructing an average of 829 lane-kilometres annually—more than double the worldwide standard.
The ongoing Trade Centre Roundabout project, currently at 40 percent completion, includes five bridges and is set to transform the roundabout into a surface-level intersection, thereby enhancing traffic flow. Once completed, the junction’s capacity will double, reducing delays from 12 minutes to 90 seconds, and travel time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street will drop from six minutes to a mere one.
The Al Mustaqbal Street Improvement Project will expand the street to four lanes in each direction, boosting its capacity by 33 percent and cutting travel times from 13 minutes to six. The project features three tunnels, a 400-metre two-lane bridge, free-flow connections, pedestrian bridges, and modernized intersections.
The newly approved architectural identity sets forth standards for infrastructure elements including bridges, street furniture, lighting, and aesthetic features. This follows the vision outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, categorizing the city into six specified zones: residential, rural, industrial, mixed-use, historical, and tourist-centric. Each zone is defined by distinct colours, materials, and designs to maintain visual coherence and enhance Dubai’s architectural essence.
Additionally, Dubai launched the Dubai Urban Challenge, a global competition designed to inspire innovative road design, attracting participation from over 500 individuals across 91 nations. Recognized winners included Oliver Charles (UK), Mohammed Ayash (Saudi Arabia), and Giulietta Debrutti (Argentina).
Sheikh Hamdan also evaluated the Dubai Tunnels project, which will revamp 18 tunnels in three phases, incorporating smart lighting, artistic wall panels, as well as sustainable materials. This initiative combines elements of safety, efficiency, and contemporary design, showcasing Dubai’s leadership in advancing urban planning and infrastructure development.
Through these groundbreaking projects, Dubai is set to create an urban landscape that successfully blends modern design with cultural heritage, while enhancing mobility and enriching the quality of life for both its residents and visitors.
