Abu Dhabi Introduces New Engineering Grading System

Abu Dhabi Introduces New Engineering Grading System

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a significant move to advance its engineering services, Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has unveiled a fresh professional grading framework, which introduces four unique accreditation levels for engineers across all recognized fields.

Under Administrative Decision 113/2025, the previous three-tier system has been updated to include Intern Engineer, Practitioner Engineer, Professional Engineer, and Expert Engineer. This initiative aims to foster a clearer, merit-driven pathway for career advancement while focusing on technical proficiency as a core component of qualifications.

All aspiring engineers will now begin at the Intern Engineer level and must pass required exams to advance to Practitioner status. Further progression into the Professional and Expert levels necessitates approved academic qualifications, successful completion of specific exams, and practical experience validated by Professional Development Units (PDUs). These PDUs can be acquired through specialized training, educational initiatives, and other DMT-accredited activities to ensure compliance with industry standards.

The examination process has been revamped to deliver a thorough assessment of both technical and regulatory knowledge. The tests will evaluate engineering skills, sector-specific practices, administrative abilities, and familiarity with the construction and building regulations in Abu Dhabi.

To aid engineers in fulfilling outstanding requirements—like degree equivalency or pending examinations—the DMT has also established a conditional registration system. This temporary status allows continued legal employment while progressing towards complete and permanent registration.

With these new standards active, Abu Dhabi seeks to cultivate a robust, future-ready engineering workforce grounded in consistent standards and ongoing professional development.
