New Zealand made a strong comeback in the second match of the five-game series, defeating South Africa in Hamilton to level the series 1-1. After a disappointing performance in the first match, the hosts showed improvement with both bat and ball.
Batting first on a challenging two-paced pitch, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 175/6. Devon Conway led the innings with a well-made 60 runs off 49 balls, providing stability at the top. He, along with Tom Latham, gave the team a solid start, reaching 43 runs without loss during the Powerplay.
However, New Zealand lost two quick wickets after the Powerplay, slowing down their momentum. Conway then built a useful 37-run partnership with Nick Kelly before Kelly was dismissed in the 11th over. Despite some struggles in the middle overs, Conway continued to anchor the innings and reached his half-century before being dismissed in the 16th over.
The late boost came from Josh Clarkson, who played a quick cameo of 26 runs off just 9 balls. His aggressive hitting helped New Zealand push their total to 175, which proved more than enough in the end.
In response, South Africa struggled from the start and were bowled out for just 107 runs. Lockie Ferguson and Ben Sears led the bowling attack brilliantly, taking three wickets each and putting constant pressure on the visitors.
Ben Sears made the first breakthrough by dismissing Connor Esterhuizen, while Mitchell Santner removed Wiaan Mulder soon after. South Africa’s middle order collapsed quickly, going from 59/3 to 91/7 within just a few overs.
George Linde tried to hold the innings together, but he did not get support from the other end as wickets kept falling. Eventually, Ferguson picked up the final wicket to seal a convincing 68-run victory for New Zealand.
With this win, New Zealand have successfully bounced back and brought the series level, setting up an exciting contest ahead.
