A recent surge of militant assaults on educational institutions in Nigeria has left more than 80 children unaccounted for, raising critical concerns regarding student safety throughout the nation.
Local authorities and human rights groups reported that a primary school in the northeastern region of Borno State was attacked by militants, where dozens of children were taken from the Askira Uba and Chibok localities.
Amnesty International indicated the attack occurred in the village of Mussa, adjacent to the Sambisa Forest, a known haven for Boko Haram insurgents and the Islamic State West Africa Province.
Officials confirmed that at least 42 children were seized in the Borno attack, once more underscoring the persistent dangers posed by armed militant factions operating in northern Nigeria.
In another incident, armed assailants targeted two secondary schools in Oyo State in the southwest on Friday. Amnesty International noted that at least 40 students were kidnapped during the assaults, which occurred just hours apart.
Local government representative Peter Wabba mentioned that the actual count of abducted children in Oyo could reach as high as 48. Families remain anxious as they await updates on the rescue of the missing students.
Authorities in Oyo State have confirmed the apprehension of three suspects connected to the school attacks, identified with the help of local community members. Security forces are actively investigating the potential involvement of additional suspects.
Human rights groups have raised alarms that ongoing assaults on schools are discouraging many children from attending classes. In certain regions, families are reportedly arranging early marriages for girls due to the prevalent threats of abduction and violence.
Kidnapping for ransom has escalated into a significant security challenge throughout Nigeria in recent years, with armed groups routinely targeting educational institutions to create panic and demand ransom payments.
