Srinagar, Nov 15, 2025: A catastrophic explosion at the Nowgam police station on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in nine fatalities, as confirmed by officials. The blast took place while forensic teams were analyzing a significant cache of explosives recovered earlier from Faridabad, Haryana, during a crackdown on a notorious terror module.
Victims included members of the Special Investigation Team (SIA), personnel from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), crime scene photographers, and other officials involved in the inquiry. J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat reported that the incident was accidental but was directly associated with the seized explosives from Faridabad.
The explosives were part of a 2,900 kg consignment retrieved from suspects' residences in Faridabad, as part of a broader investigation into a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror module involved in several threats and attacks, including this month's Red Fort explosion in Delhi, which resulted in at least ten deaths.
Investigations by police revealed these explosives to be linked to a network supporting urban terror factions in Jammu and Kashmir. Key seizures included 2,563 kg of explosive materials from Hafeez Mohammad Ishtiaq's home, a local imam, alongside an additional 358 kg of explosives, detonators, and timers from adjacent areas.
Several arrests have been made concerning the terror module, including clerics, doctors, and local residents across Nowgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and Kulgam. Authorities also discovered JeM posters and related materials during subsequent raids, signaling connections to individuals previously involved in attacks, notably Dr Umar un Nabi, who allegedly detonated a related blast in Delhi using similar explosives.
The Nowgam blast brings to light the dangers faced by security and forensic personnel when dealing with large amounts of confiscated explosive materials. Local residents of Srinagar expressed their shock at the tragedy, while police have initiated an intensive investigation to ensure safety protocols were adhered to.
Authorities reiterated that this incident is part of ongoing nationwide efforts to target terror modules connected to JeM and similar extremist groups. While the discovery and seizure of explosives in Faridabad represent a significant achievement, the tragic accident underlines the persistent dangers linked to terrorist stockpiles.
As investigations move forward, officials have called for heightened vigilance in managing explosive substances and reassured the public that dismantling terror networks across states continues to be a priority.
