Oman and Iran Enhance Collaboration on Strait of Hormuz Navigation

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Oman and Iran have agreed to strengthen their discussions on the management of navigation and maritime services in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.

This commitment was made public in a joint statement following talks that took place in Muscat on Tuesday. The two nations plan to form a joint working group that will engage their foreign ministries in continuing these discussions while also reaching out to other Gulf coastal states and relevant stakeholders.

The initiative is seen as part of a broader implementation of a memorandum of understanding signed last week, encouraging Iran to enter talks with Oman and other littoral countries regarding the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, which serves as a vital pathway for global oil shipments.

This announcement came after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi visited Oman, where they met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

In their joint statement, Oman and Iran reaffirmed their pledge to ensure the safe transit of vessels in accordance with international law while emphasizing their sovereignty over their territorial waters.

The discussions are particularly timely amid rising tensions affecting maritime operations in the area, especially following disruptions linked to the U.S.-Israeli actions against Iran since February. These developments have led to a blockade on Iranian ports and restricted movements in the Strait.
