Pakistan Raises Alarm Over Afghan Involvement in Deadly Attack

Post by : Shakul

Pakistan has formally raised concerns with Afghanistan following a tragic suicide bombing in its northwest that resulted in the deaths of 15 police personnel and injuries to others. Authorities in Pakistan allege that militants associated with the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) orchestrated the attack, asserting the perpetrators operated from within Afghan borders. This incident adds to the fraught relations between Islamabad and Kabul amid ongoing security issues at their shared frontier.

On Monday, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned a high-ranking Afghan diplomat to deliver an official protest regarding the assault. Officials from the ministry stated that initial investigations indicated the operation was devised by militants based in Afghanistan. Pakistani authorities have cautioned that they hold the right to undertake strong measures against those accountable for the incident. Afghan officials have yet to respond to these accusations.

The attack occurred late Saturday evening in Bannu district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, located near the Afghan border. Local police reported that a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into a police security post, detonating it upon impact. Following the blast, armed assailants engaged in a gunfight with police, resulting in some officers being killed both by gunfire and due to parts of the structure collapsing from the explosion. Reports confirm at least four additional police officers sustained injuries during the attack.

Authorities in Pakistan have indicated that a newly established militant group known as Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamabad suspects that this group is closely tied to the TTP, which has been associated with an increasing frequency of assaults on law enforcement and government entities in recent years. Pakistan has frequently accused the Afghan Taliban administration of sheltering such militants, a claim that Kabul has consistently refuted.

In another security incident reported on Monday, a suspected militant unintentionally triggered explosives in a remote village near the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border. According to police reports, a local resident, Mohammad Liaquat, became suspicious of the unidentified man approaching a security post and halted him for questioning. In a panic, the assailant detonated the explosives, resulting in Liaquat's death.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi commended Liaquat for his courageous actions, asserting that he likely averted a larger calamity. The minister labeled him a hero who gave his life to prevent more violence. Local communities also celebrated Liaquat’s bravery, while security forces have intensified patrols in the surrounding regions after the incident.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated in recent months amid rising militant violence and ongoing border conflicts. Cross-border hostilities and security operations have reportedly impacted hundreds of individuals since February. Although recent peace discussions involving Afghan Taliban officials and Pakistani representatives, aided by Chinese mediation, were conducted, sporadic violence and mistrust continue to hinder stabilization efforts in the border territories. Analysts suggest this latest attack may exacerbate diplomatic and security relations between the two nations.
