Panama Urges China to Respect Sovereign Rights

Post by : Shakul

Panama has urged China to respect its sovereignty following reports of increased inspections and detentions of Panama-flagged vessels at Chinese ports. The concerns were raised by Panama’s top diplomat amid rising tensions linked to recent legal developments.

According to officials, the actions by China are believed to be connected to a ruling by Panama’s Supreme Court earlier this year. The court invalidated the legal framework that allowed a subsidiary of CK Hutchison to operate key port terminals near the Panama Canal, leading the government to cancel those concessions.

Panama’s foreign ministry emphasized that the court decision was an internal legal matter and called on China to respect the country’s sovereign judicial processes. Authorities warned that the detentions could impact maritime trade and disrupt global shipping operations involving Panama-registered vessels.

The situation highlights growing tensions in international trade and diplomacy, as strategic infrastructure such as the Panama Canal continues to play a crucial role in global commerce. Observers note that further escalation could have broader implications for shipping routes and economic relations between the two nations.
