Increasing scrutiny is directed at Peru's electoral authorities as delays and claims of irregularities impede vote counting in the recent presidential elections. This sluggish process has left uncertainty about which candidate will oppose conservative Keiko Fujimori in the upcoming run-off set for June.
The election took place earlier this week, yet logistical issues—particularly with ballot distribution—prompted officials to extend voting in areas like the capital, Lima. According to the latest updates, the identity of the second-place candidate remains unclear, intensifying political anxiety across the nation.
As per the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), leftist contender Roberto Sanchez and conservative Raphael Lopez Aliaga are entangled in a tight contest for second place. With over 93 percent of votes tallied, the difference between them is quite marginal, which complicates the outcome.
On the forefront, Keiko Fujimori leads with approximately 17 percent of the votes, solidifying her position for the second round. However, electoral observers indicate that verifying the final results could extend up to two weeks, which is concerning.
The delays are attributed to around 5 percent of ballots needing further examination due to errors or absent information. These ballots must undergo scrutiny by a designated electoral jury before contributing to the official count, hindering the overall process.
Criticism towards ONPE head Piero Corvetto is mounting. Leading business figures and politicians have called for his resignation, alleging that the integrity of the electoral process has been compromised. Some have proposed appointing a new official to supervise the run-off to restore public confidence.
Allegations of voting fraud have surfaced, notably among supporters of Rafael Lopez Aliaga, although Corvetto has dismissed any hints of malfeasance. Furthermore, Peru’s top electoral tribunal has lodged a criminal complaint against him for alleged breaches of voting procedures.
Authorities are probing an incident where election materials from various polling stations were discovered abandoned on a road in Lima, although officials clarified that votes from those stations had already been counted, raising additional alarms.
Despite the prevailing tensions, European Union observers reported no evidence of electoral fraud. However, the ongoing delays and mounting political pressure continue to contribute to uncertainty as Peru gears up for its vital presidential run-off.
