Tragic Landslide Capsizes Vessels in Peru's Ucayali: 12 Lives Lost and Many Missing

Tragic Landslide Capsizes Vessels in Peru's Ucayali: 12 Lives Lost and Many Missing

Post by : Meena Hassan

A devastating landslide claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, including three children, in Peru’s Ucayali region yesterday. The incident occurred at the river port of Iparia, where two boats were submerged, and rescue operations are actively ongoing as dozens remain missing.

The authorities reported that the landslide struck during the early morning hours, prompted by erosion alongside the Amazon riverbank. One of the vessels reportedly held around 50 passengers, while the other was estimated to be vacant at the time.

Navy Captain Jonathan Novoa informed the media that nine bodies had been retrieved, with 25 individuals sustaining injuries, and about 40 others are still unaccounted for. He emphasized that rescue operations faced significant challenges due to strong currents, whirlpools, and thick morning fog.

Authorities are collaborating closely with families on-site to ascertain the precise number of passengers aboard the boats. Footage from the scene depicted luggage and goods adrift in the river, while anxious relatives searched desperately along the riverbank.

The national emergency operations center has confirmed that the navy is assisting in both rescue and recovery efforts. Officials warned that the ongoing flood season heightens the risk of similar incidents along the riverbanks in the region.

As rescue teams persist in their search for missing persons, they stress the importance of public cooperation and caution during this critical time.
