A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, on Friday, 17 October, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). This follows a series of strong earthquakes in the region, including two offshore quakes earlier in October.
Earlier Tremors in the Region
On 10 October, Mindanao experienced twin earthquakes. The first, measuring 7.4, resulted in at least seven deaths, landslides, and evacuations amid a brief tsunami warning, later withdrawn. The second quake, with a magnitude of 6.8, also prompted a local tsunami alert.
Cause and Location of Quakes
Both earthquakes were caused by movement along the Philippine Trench, an undersea fault line. The quakes struck at a depth of 37 kilometres (23 miles) off Manay town in Davao Oriental province, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) chief Teresito Bacolcol. Tsunami warnings indicated waves could rise over one metre (3.2 feet) above normal sea levels.
Government Response and Preparedness
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that the government is assessing potential damage and preparing rescue teams and relief operations. Residents in coastal areas were advised to evacuate to higher ground or move further inland for safety.
Doublet Earthquakes Explained
Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol described the recent quakes as a “doublet”, meaning two separate but closely timed earthquakes along a major undersea trench. Such quakes are rare but pose significant risks due to their timing and location.
Initial Damage Reports
Initial reports from Manay town indicate damage to homes, buildings, and bridges. Civil defense official Ednar Dayanghirang confirmed at least seven fatalities in towns near the epicenter. Authorities continue to assess the full scale of destruction and ensure the safety of residents.
Earthquake Frequency in the Philippines
The Philippines is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", experiencing over 800 earthquakes annually. These recent tremors are among the most powerful in recent years and come just two weeks after a 6.9-magnitude quake offshore of Cebu, which claimed 74 lives, making it the deadliest in over a decade.
Authorities emphasize the importance of emergency preparedness, early warning systems, and public awareness. Residents are urged to follow evacuation orders, stay informed about aftershocks, and report any infrastructure damage promptly.
