Over 200,000 Rally in Philippines Against Corruption

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Manila, Philippines – November 18, 2025: A formidable turnout of citizens rallied in Manila on Monday as they staged a significant protest against corruption, specifically calling for accountability regarding alleged mismanagement in flood-mitigation initiatives that have incited public discontent and adversely affected investor confidence.

The rally, continuing for a second day, attracted over 200,000 participants, becoming one of the most substantial civic demonstrations witnessed in recent years. Many protesters camped overnight to ensure their voices were heard, compounding reports of attendance exceeding 600,000 since the protest's inception on Sunday—a clear indicator of widespread dissatisfaction.

Organized by Iglesia Ni Cristo, a religious organization with around two million followers recognized for its bloc voting, the event underscores the group’s significant role in Philippine civil and political spheres. Protesters expressed their discontent over perceived corruption in publicly-funded flood prevention projects, many of which have faced critique for inefficiency and alleged financial impropriety.

Economic analysts have determined that the ongoing controversy contributes to unease, noting a decline in public expenditure during the third quarter that aligns with the lowest GDP growth in four years—partly attributed to weakened investor confidence fueled by corruption allegations.

Local authorities have ensured a robust presence to maintain order throughout the demonstrations, with law enforcement and municipal leaders actively regulating traffic and encouraging peaceful protest.

Protesters articulated a pressing call for transparency and accountability in government operations. One participant stated, "We demand our leaders be accountable for their actions. Effective flood prevention is critical for safeguarding our communities, and we expect integrity in these initiatives."

The significant turnout reflects an upswing in civic involvement among Filipinos, showcasing a populace increasingly invested in governance and public accountability matters. Analysts foresee that such large-scale protests may shape political narratives and policy focuses, particularly as elections and legislative actions approach.

As protests extend into Tuesday, the attention of both local and international media is fixed on Manila, shedding light on the convergence of public dissent, governmental accountability, and economic health in the Philippines.
