Picasso's $37 Million Portrait of Dora Maar Captivates Auction Bidders

Picasso's $37 Million Portrait of Dora Maar Captivates Auction Bidders

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A Picasso painting of his long-time muse Dora Maar fetched an impressive $37 million at a Paris auction on Friday, attracting worldwide attention. The artwork titled "Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat (Dora Maar)" had been unseen in public for over 80 years and forms part of Picasso’s acclaimed "Woman in a Hat" collection.

Painted in July 1943, this vibrant portrait depicts Dora Maar adorned with a colorful floral hat, embodying the spirit and emotional intensity characteristic of Picasso’s oeuvre. Maar, a notable artist and photographer, was Picasso’s partner and muse for around seven years, a time filled with passion and challenges. The painting had been in a family collection since its acquisition in 1944 before making its debut at the Drouot auction house, igniting enthusiasm among global collectors.

Auctioneer Christophe Lucien described the sale as “an extraordinary achievement” and a touching moment, noting that the piece tells “a small chapter of love” between Picasso and Maar. “You can see that she was holding back tears as she realized Picasso was moving on,” Lucien conveyed, emphasizing the complex nature of their relationship.

Art critics lauded the painting for its exceptional preservation and lively colors. Pablo Picasso expert Agnès Sevestre-Barbé remarked that the artwork displayed all its raw elements, enabling viewers to appreciate the vibrant genius of Picasso. Previously, this work had been limited to black-and-white images, leaving collectors unaware of its full-color allure.

The Dora Maar portrait was sold for 32,012,397 euros, including buyer premiums, surpassing expectations and marking the highest price achieved at a French auction this year. Nevertheless, it does not surpass some of Picasso’s other record-setting sales, such as "Femme à la montre" ($139.4 million) and "Les Femmes d'Alger" ($179.4 million).

The auction was celebrated by collectors and art lovers alike as a unique chance to experience Picasso's emotional engagement and artistic mastery, particularly through the lens of his muse, Dora Maar. This sale highlights the lasting allure of Picasso's portraits and the ongoing intrigue surrounding his personal and artistic partnerships.
