A new political controversy has arisen following the Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) selection of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman during the IPL 2026 auction. The franchise secured the talented cricketer for ₹9.20 crore, a decision that received mixed reactions from cricket pundits and political figures alike.
This cricketing choice has sparked a significant political debate, with BJP and Congress leaders exchanging heated comments regarding national sentiment and India-Bangladesh relations. The auction's timing, coinciding with reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, has intensified discussions around the issue.
BJP leader Sangeet Som condemned Shah Rukh Khan, labeling him a “gaddar” or traitor, for employing wealth gained in India to back players from a nation he accused of undermining Indian interests. He highlighted the ongoing hardships faced by Hindus in Bangladesh, arguing that these incidents can’t be overlooked. Som’s provocative statements have resonated across various political reactions.
In response, Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Nirupam advised Shah Rukh Khan to consider dropping Mustafizur Rahman from his roster, suggesting that public sentiments related to Bangladesh were running high and that association could incite backlash. He claimed that parting ways with the player could safeguard national sentiments and preserve the team’s public image.
Moreover, Anand Dubey from Shiv Sena (UBT) escalated the call to an outright ban on Bangladeshi players in the IPL, asserting that including players from both Bangladesh and Pakistan on Indian turf would be disrespectful to national sentiments.
Contrary to these views, Congress leaders defended Shah Rukh Khan, criticizing the vitriol directed his way. Congress MP Manickam Tagore argued that branding Khan a traitor was detrimental and contradictory to India's diverse values. He called for a distinction between hate and nationalism, cautioning against societal division.
Congress figure Supriya Shrinate challenged the BJP’s narrative, questioning the criteria that permitted Bangladeshi players into the IPL auction. She aimed her inquiries at cricket administrators like the BCCI and the ICC, pointing out that the responsibility lies not with franchise owners but with governing bodies.
Cricket analysts contend that Rahman’s selection is based on his athletic prowess rather than political implications, noting that IPL teams frequently incorporate international talent for sporting reasons.
This evolving controversy underscores the interconnection of sports, cinema, and politics in India. What commenced as a standard IPL decision has escalated into a broader conversation about nationalism, unity, and the influence of sports in fostering community. The forthcoming IPL season's dynamics and team selections in light of this debate remain to be seen.
