Ukraine has indicated that the ongoing peace discussions in Paris are beginning to yield tangible outcomes, despite significant hurdles that remain. The focus of these talks is on resolving the conflict with Russia and securing a long-term safety framework for the nation ahead of a potential ceasefire.
Kyrylo Budanov, the newly appointed chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, remarked that the second day of negotiations has led to “concrete results.” While he noted that some details are confidential, he reassured Ukrainians that the nation's core interests remain protected.
Meetings are being held with critical allies, including the United States and partner nations in Europe, to establish security assurances. Kyiv is pressing for firm guarantees that would deter future aggressions and help sustain peace after prolonged hostilities.
A central issue in these discussions remains the future of the eastern Donbas region. Russia is insisting that Ukraine concede this territory as part of any peace settlement. However, Ukrainian authorities have categorically dismissed this demand, arguing that Donbas is an integral part of the nation and cannot be relinquished.
Earlier, President Zelenskiy mentioned that discussions between Ukrainian and U.S. officials had touched upon various territorial proposals. He emphasized that disputes over land are currently the main barrier to achieving peace. One suggestion was the establishment of a free economic zone in select parts of Donbas on the condition of Ukrainian withdrawal, a proposal Kyiv has not endorsed.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that territorial matters were part of the agenda in the Paris talks, noting that discussions will persist. Nevertheless, no final accord has been established yet.
The Ukrainian government strives to balance the pressing demand for peace against its duty to safeguard sovereignty. The war's severe toll on cities, the economy, and daily living conditions highlights the critical nature of diplomacy, though it remains a delicate endeavor.
Currently, Ukrainian officials express cautious optimism, noting incremental improvements. However, they stress that any agreement must honor Ukraine’s territorial integrity and ensure enduring security for its citizens.
