Following the Eid festivities, Jakarta is witnessing a surge in new arrivals, primarily motivated by employment opportunities.
Data from the Population and Civil Registry Office (Dukcapil) indicates that approximately 35 percent of migrants are arriving in search of work. This trend emphasizes Jakarta's status as Indonesia’s principal economic hub, providing more job prospects than other regions.
Denny Wahyu Haryanto, the head of Dukcapil, noted that the majority of newcomers belong to the productive age bracket of 15 to 64 years, which constitutes over three-quarters of these arrivals. This trend reinforces the notion that economic motivations largely drive migration.
Family reasons rank second in the motivations for migration, followed by job transfers, housing necessities, and educational pursuits. Nevertheless, employment remains the leading reason for many migrating to Jakarta, especially among those pursuing informal sector jobs.
Statistics reveal that a considerable portion of migrants possess lower educational qualifications, with approximately 79 percent holding only a high school certificate or less. Many are expected to belong to lower-income strata and often find work in informal settings such as manual labor, small trade, and service industries.
Jakarta’s advanced infrastructure and essential public services, including transport, healthcare, and educational facilities, continue to attract individuals from rural and semi-urban environments.
Nonetheless, this rapid population growth poses challenges. About one-fifth of newcomers settle in dense or underdeveloped regions, including informal settlements and neighborhoods on the city's perimeters. This situation highlights pressing concerns regarding urban planning and housing shortages.
Officials plan to leverage this migration data to formulate targeted policies, focusing on enhancing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) while integrating informal sector workers into formal employment through training initiatives.
As Jakarta continues to establish itself as an economic beacon, authorities are tasked with harmonizing growth prospects with sustainable urban development.
