In 2025, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad announced a significant boost in rail service reliability, with a remarkable more than 50% drop in disruptions across all rail lines compared to the previous year. Only 31 incidents were recorded in 2025, a stark decrease from 71 disruptions in 2024.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke hailed this achievement as a reaffirmation of Prasarana’s dedication to enhancing public transport, following harsh critiques in 2024 over rampant breakdowns and delays that diminished public faith in Klang Valley rail services.
During Prasarana’s annual performance presentation, Loke remarked on the considerable advancements since taking office as transport minister. He acknowledged that persistent technical challenges previously burdened rail operations but credited Prasarana personnel for their unwavering efforts over the last three years, leading to noticeable improvements.
A standout enhancement mentioned was the adoption of a new performance metric called Mean Kilometres Before Failure (MKBF), which assesses train travel distance before any mechanical or technical hiccup. The average for 2024 stood at one malfunction every 70,000 kilometres, which was significantly elevated to one instance every 790,000 kilometres in 2025.
Alongside reliability gains, public transport usage has climbed steadily. Ridership on Prasarana-operated services jumped 11% year-on-year to 1.31 million passengers, nearing figures seen prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Loke introduced the annual performance briefing as part of wider reforms in the public transport domain.
Looking to the future, Prasarana aims to complete the third LRT line serving Shah Alam, which has encountered numerous delays. Loke expressed awareness of public dissatisfaction but emphasized that safety remains paramount. He highlighted that outstanding technical issues with contractors need resolution before moving forward to the free-fail run (FFR) phase, a key step for final authorization.
A meeting is on the agenda for next week to outline subsequent steps and ascertain when the FFR can commence. Until then, no official opening date will be disclosed.
Additionally, current rail services are set for substantial enhancements. The Kelana Jaya LRT line will see comprehensive upgrades throughout the year, backed by a RM1 billion allocation under Budget 2026 aimed at replacing 26 train units. This line presently accommodates around 250,000 daily passengers.
In 2025, the Kajang MRT line stood out as RapidRail’s busiest service, recording an average daily ridership of 270,000 passengers, showcasing a growing dependency on urban rail transport.
