Priyanka Chopra Applauds Zohran Mamdani After Historic NYC Mayoral Win

Post by : Meena Hassan

Actor Priyanka Chopra, who lives in New York City with her husband Nick Jonas and their daughter Malti Marie, used Instagram to mark a notable civic development. Zohran Mamdani has been elected the 111th mayor of New York City, becoming the youngest person and the first Muslim to assume the role at 34.

Posting in her Instagram Story, Priyanka shared a screenshot of Mamdani speaking to supporters and offered her congratulations, noting the historic nature of the win and sending regards to his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair. Mamdani is the son of director Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani’s family later lived in Cape Town, South Africa, before settling in New York. He attended The Bronx High School of Science and graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in Africana Studies. Prior to winning the mayoralty, he served as a member of the New York State Assembly.

Priyanka has been based in New York since 2016, when she filmed the ABC series Quantico. Her relationship with musician-actor Nick Jonas developed during her time in the city; Jonas proposed in Crete in July 2018 and the couple married in a multi-day ceremony at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur that combined Christian and Hindu traditions.

On her life in the city, Priyanka has described her apartment as a creative and calming space, citing the skyline and Hudson River views as a place where she often watches sunset light change and finds quiet reflection.

Mamdani’s victory is being seen as a reflection of New York’s demographic diversity and the rise of younger leaders in local politics. Chopra’s public congratulations underline how international figures are acknowledging key civic moments in their adopted communities.
