Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar Arrested by CBI in ₹5-Crore Bribery Scandal

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant impact within the Punjab Police by detaining senior IPS officer Harcharan Singh Bhullar in connection with a conspicuous bribery scandal. Serving as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Ropar Range since 2009, Bhullar was apprehended in his Chandigarh office after the CBI executed a successful sting operation based on a complaint regarding a bribe request. Alongside Bhullar, a private individual alleged to act as a middleman was also arrested during the operation.

The CBI discovered the bribery scheme when a complainant reported that Bhullar solicited payment through an intermediary to manage an FIR lodged against him. In a prompt response, the agency set up a trap and caught the officer red-handed while he was accepting the bribe. This marks one of the most significant CBI operations targeting a senior police official in recent memory.

Following the arrest, CBI officials conducted thorough searches at various locations associated with Harcharan Singh Bhullar in both Punjab and Chandigarh. The searches yielded impressive findings, including over ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kilograms of gold jewelry, property documents, luxury items, and firearms. The CBI has labeled these discoveries as “substantial and incriminating,” reinforcing the gravity of the corruption case against the high-ranking officer.

Insiders within the CBI have indicated that the value of assets seized from Bhullar's premises raises serious concerns regarding his financial activities and potential abuse of authority. Documents found suggest he might own several high-value properties throughout Punjab. The agency anticipates that the scope of the bribery investigation will widen as they continue to track the financial routes and uncover possible accomplices within Bhullar’s alleged corruption network.

This incident has ignited significant alarm and dismay within law enforcement circles, being described by many as a “black mark” on the integrity of the police force. Senior officials have assured that the CBI will approach this case with utmost transparency, ensuring accountability across all levels. The arrest of Harcharan Singh Bhullar serves as a reminder of the agency's determination to combat corruption at any rank.

While Bhullar remains in custody for interrogation, further investigations are in progress to fully reveal the scope of his alleged corrupt actions. This case, notable for its sizable monetary recovery and the involvement of a senior officer expected to uphold the law, has drawn national media attention. CBI officials have confirmed that additional arrests may occur as the inquiry unfolds, adding to what is considered one of the most shocking bribery cases in Punjab’s recent history.
