Punjab Youth Found Dead in Italy; Family Seeks Government Aid

Post by : Meena Hassan

A 24-year-old from Punjab, Twinkle Randhawa, was discovered deceased under unclear circumstances in Italy last week. His distraught family is calling for a comprehensive investigation and assistance from the Indian authorities to recover his body for final rites in India.

Twinkle arrived in Italy merely four months ago, aiming for a brighter future. His financially struggling parents even took out a loan to facilitate his relocation. Prior to his move, Twinkle resided in Dubai for a year. His family is now left to cope with the tragic ambiguity surrounding his demise.

Relatives of Twinkle noted that after losing contact with him for several days, they sought information from his roommates in Italy. However, these individuals provided contradictory and confusing explanations regarding Twinkle's status. At times, they claimed he had not awakened, while at others, they suggested that the police had taken him, leaving the family in the dark.

Sarban Singh, a relative, stated, “Each time we inquired about Twinkle, those living with him offered different justifications. The family is in a serious financial situation, with his father working as a driver to support them.”

Jagir Singh, Twinkle’s father, mentioned that he last spoke with his son two days prior, and Twinkle seemed to be in good health. “He was fine when we last chatted, but after that, we lost all communication,” he recounted.

Jagir recounted how Twinkle's friends claimed that he collapsed in a park and was offered lemonade before being allegedly taken into police custody, although the family remains unsure about the actual circumstances leading to his death.

Baljeet Kaur, Twinkle’s mother, remembered their last conversation just two days ago when he sounded healthy. The subsequent day, she attempted to contact him, only to hear from a flatmate that Twinkle had gone out with friends, supposedly looking for work. Later, she was informed that Twinkle had fainted and reportedly suffered a heart attack, yet the specifics remain unclear.

Twinkle had aspirations of bringing his mother to Italy after establishing himself. His mother expressed her sorrow, stating, “This was my youngest and dearest son. He always promised me, ‘Mom, once I settle down here, I will invite you to join me.’ I never envisioned this could occur. I implore the government to assist in bringing my son's body back so we can conduct his last rites in Punjab.”

The family's grief and confusion underline the urgent need for clear answers and assistance. They are appealing to the Indian government for immediate intervention to ensure Twinkle’s remains are returned to India for cremation according to Punjabi traditions.
