Putin Steers Clear of AI; Russian Officials Embrace It

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Thursday, the Kremlin confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not utilize artificial intelligence (AI) tools directly. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that although Putin avoids AI, many officials within his administration depend on the technology.

Peskov noted that AI tools were employed recently to manage and categorize inquiries from the public during President Putin's annual Q&A session. This event allows citizens to engage directly with the president on various national and global topics.

This announcement follows President Putin's call for establishing a national task force aimed at coordinating the country’s AI development efforts. He underscored the importance of cultivating domestic generative AI systems to uphold Russia's technological sovereignty and lessen dependence on foreign technologies.

The Kremlin’s disclosure delineates the president’s personal reluctance to engage with AI, simultaneously highlighting an escalating integration of AI within governmental and public communication realms. This trend points to Russia’s increasing commitment to leveraging AI in sectors such as public services, information processing, and national security.

By clarifying his personal stance while endorsing broader governmental use, Putin demonstrates a measured approach towards AI while advocating for national strategies to enhance Russia’s technological autonomy.
