Rama Duwaji: Gen Z First Lady and Creative Architect Behind Mamdani’s Campaign

Rama Duwaji: Gen Z First Lady and Creative Architect Behind Mamdani’s Campaign

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Rama Duwaji, 28, who is married to New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, has become the city’s first First Lady from Generation Z. Though often kept out of the spotlight, Duwaji played a key role in shaping Mamdani’s digital branding, designing campaign visuals and expanding his social media reach.

A Syrian-American illustrator, Duwaji moved to the United States in 2021. The couple met on the dating app Hinge and announced their engagement in October 2024. Their relationship included a private nikah and engagement ceremony on a Dubai rooftop, followed by a courthouse wedding in New York earlier this year.

She holds an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Duwaji’s work focuses on themes such as sisterhood, Arab identity, political resistance and communal life. Several of her pieces have expressed pro-Palestinian viewpoints and depicted scenes addressing violence and U.S. involvement.

Based in Brooklyn, Duwaji also produces hand-illustrated ceramics, notably blue-and-white plates. She maintains a substantial online following—about 235,000 followers on Instagram—where she posts her art, political commentary and occasional personal moments, including glimpses of her relationship with Mamdani.

Mamdani’s election as New York’s first Muslim mayor has attracted international attention, and Duwaji’s contributions as a creative strategist and supportive partner are seen as influential to his campaign’s public image. Her arrival in the role marks a generational shift and highlights the growing role of young creatives in contemporary politics.
