Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah has written about the sudden passing of her long-time colleague and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-star Satish Shah, who died on October 25 after suffering a cardiac arrest. In her piece she remembers his warmth, humour and the quick-witted message he sent hours before he collapsed.
Last Message Turns Haunting
In a column for The Indian Express, Ratna described receiving Satish’s final WhatsApp at 12:57 PM on October 25: “I’m often mistaken for an adult because of my age.” Amused by his line, she answered at 2:14 PM with, “That’s just right for you!” A short time later, at 3:49 PM, producer JD Majethia phoned to say, “Satishbhai is no more.”
Ratna wrote that the news first felt like a cruel prank and then an impossible reality. She reflected on Satish’s determination to embrace life with laughter, despite difficulties, and how that made his loss especially shocking.
Industry in Shock
The Sarabhai vs Sarabhai ensemble — including Sumeet Raghavan, Rajesh Kumar and JD Majethia — reportedly reacted with disbelief, filling their group chat with stunned messages. Ratna noted that many friends had also received upbeat notes from Satish earlier that day, which compounded the sense of incredulity.
Known for impeccable comic timing and kindness, Satish remained lively and jovial until his final hours. Ratna highlighted his ability to make others laugh even when he was tired or unwell.
Cause of Death Clarified
While some reports initially mentioned kidney issues, Rajesh Kumar later clarified that Satish suffered a cardiac arrest at his Mumbai residence. He reportedly collapsed during lunch, was taken to hospital, but could not be revived. Satish Shah was 74. His funeral was attended by close family and colleagues who remembered him as a man of wit and grace.
Indravadan Sarabhai's Lasting Impact
Satish Shah’s Indravadan Sarabhai remains one of Indian television’s most enduring characters. Alongside Ratna Pathak Shah’s Maya, he helped shape a gentle, family-based sitcom that still resonates through reruns and social media. Ratna called working with him “a creative joy,” praising his intelligent, spontaneous comic instincts that always enhanced a scene.
Tributes from Colleagues
Messages of condolence poured in from across film and TV. Producer JD Majethia described Satish as equally warm off-screen and on, while Sumeet Raghavan said the team had lost “the heart of our Sarabhai family.” Senior actors such as Boman Irani, Paresh Rawal and Anupam Kher also honoured Satish as a pioneering comedian and a gentleman.
A Career of Laughter
With a career spanning more than four decades and over 200 films, Satish Shah left a large body of work, from Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai to films including Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! Ratna closed her tribute noting Satish’s rare gift for turning pain into laughter and the deep void his absence creates.
As the entertainment world mourns, fans continue sharing classic clips and lines from Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, keeping the character of Indravadan alive through memories and laughter.
