Expensive Richard Mille Watch Vanishes at Cannes Film Festival

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A highly valuable Richard Mille watch, estimated to be worth between €700,000 and €1 million, was reported stolen from a hotel guest amid the ongoing Cannes Film Festival in France, according to sources from Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The incident transpired at the Palm Beach hotel, located on Boulevard de la Croisette, a hub of activity during the renowned festival. Crowds had gathered for events when the theft occurred.

Reports indicate that the watch was taken during a time of significant congestion near the hotel’s restroom area. Investigators suspect that the thieves made use of the crowd to execute the theft discreetly.

This luxurious watch hails from the exclusive Richard Mille brand, which is celebrated globally for its high-priced timepieces, often seen on the wrists of celebrities, athletes, and affluent collectors.

Cannes authorities frequently contend with organized theft rings during the festival period. With high-profile guests flocking to the French Riviera, luxury watches, jewelry, and designer items are common targets.

Last year, French prosecutors logged over 12 incidents involving either thefts or attempts related to luxury watches in Cannes within a two-month timeframe.

Investigators note that numerous criminal organizations across Europe employ sophisticated strategies to resell stolen high-end watches. These tactics often involve altering serial numbers and fabricating certificates and packaging to sell the stolen goods on international markets at great profits.

Each year, the Cannes Film Festival draws an array of celebrities, business leaders, influencers, and wealth tourists. In light of chronic theft issues, authorities typically ramp up security measures throughout Cannes to ensure visitor safety and deter luxury-related crimes during the event.
