Ahead of President Vladimir Putin's anticipated trip to New Delhi for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in December, Russia has made a significant defense proposal to India. This will mark Putin's first visit to India since December 2021, and the deal could pave the way for a notable enhancement in bilateral defense relations.
Complete Access to Su-57 Technology on the Table
Russian defense authorities have declared their readiness to grant India full access to Su-57 technology, a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. This includes critical components such as engine technology, sensors, stealth materials, and control systems essential for developing advanced aircraft.
The initial plan involves supplying aircraft manufactured in Russia, eventually transitioning production to India. This strategy will enable India to gain expertise, foster development, and ultimately manufacture its own advanced fighters, a unique opportunity not provided by any other nation.
Russia is also prepared to support India's requests for manufacturing rights, development partnerships, and the integration of Indian-made weaponry into the aircraft.
Potential Inclusion of the Su-75 Checkmate in the Agreement
According to sources, Russia might consider offering its new single-engine stealth fighter, the Su-75 Checkmate, to India. This aircraft is designed to fulfill light and medium combat roles and could potentially be manufactured in India if an agreement is reached.
Defense analysts suggest that local production of the Su-75 could significantly reduce India's future air-power expenditures while creating substantial export prospects, akin to the successful BrahMos missile initiative.
The Su-75 is expected to complement India’s twin-engine AMCA program, as both aircraft will serve distinct purposes and enhance the Air Force's capabilities in different domains.
Reasons Behind Russia's Strategic Offer
Russian officials emphasize that India has proven to be a reliable partner over the decades. Despite international sanctions and military pressures faced by India, Russia has continuously supplied defense equipment and responded to its security requirements. Moscow aims to advance this collaboration by empowering India to independently produce sophisticated fighter aircraft.
Russian delegates have indicated that any technological request from New Delhi will be considered, including advanced radar systems, AI integration, stealth enhancements, and modern aerial combat weapons.
Preparatory Moves for Putin’s Visit
In anticipation of President Putin’s visit, various significant defense sector announcements are expected. Preparations are ongoing, with recent meetings between Nikolai Patrushev, a senior Russian security official, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussing enhanced collaboration, especially in maritime and strategic defense capacities.
These discussions aim to refine arrangements for the upcoming December summit, which is poised to spotlight the next phase of the India-Russia partnership, focusing on modernization of defense production, expanding strategic ties, and addressing shifting security challenges in the region.
