Kyiv Under Attack: Russian Drones and Missiles Cause 11 Injuries

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In the early hours of Friday, Kyiv faced a substantial drone and missile assault as Russian forces targeted both residential and public structures throughout the Ukrainian capital. This wave of attacks left 11 individuals injured, among them a pregnant woman and one in critical condition, as reported by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Authorities indicated extensive damage to high-rise apartments, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and administrative buildings across various districts of the city, which is home to around three million residents. Multiple fires broke out in different locations, necessitating a prompt response from emergency teams.

“The Russians are striking residential areas. Numerous multi-storey buildings are damaged in nearly all districts,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, in a Telegram update.

Extensive Damage Reported

The Dniprovskyi district, located east of the Dnipro River, experienced severe destruction, with three residential high-rises impacted. Nine residents were evacuated from a building that was ablaze. In the Desnyanskyi district, two buildings were compromised, and further damage occurred in five other buildings within the historically significant Podil district. Additionally, the city’s heating system in one district was disrupted, raising concerns over potential power and water outages.

Footage on social media depicted flames consuming buildings and residents gathering amidst debris-strewn streets. Officials verified ongoing efforts by emergency units to control the blazes and assist those affected.

Wider Consequences

Ukrainian air force officials reported that Russian drones and guided missiles were also targeting various regions, signalling a coordinated uptick in attacks. The governor of Kyiv's region mentioned that incidents of fires and injuries were occurring beyond the city limits.

These assaults emphasize the persistent danger to civilians and vital infrastructure in Kyiv, escalating fears about residents' safety and the city's capacity to sustain essential services during ongoing hostilities.

As local authorities proceed with emergency measures and damage evaluations, residents are urged to stay alert and adhere to safety guidelines. This incident underscores the ongoing threat of civilian-targeted strikes in urban environments and the broader challenges Ukraine faces amid relentless military aggression.
