Jaipur Photoshoot Sparks Controversy Over Pink Elephant

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Jaipur: A recent art photoshoot in Jaipur has sparked controversy after Russian photographer Julia Buruleva painted an elephant bright pink for a creative project.

Buruleva, a Barcelona-based conceptual photographer, traveled to Jaipur to capture the city’s vibrant colors and traditional aesthetics. She shared on Instagram that the idea of a “pink elephant against classic Rajasthani gates” emerged after weeks of observing local imagery, as elephants are a key cultural symbol of Rajasthan.

The photographer detailed the preparation for the shoot, including multiple visits to elephant farms to find willing participants and securing locations amidst heritage restrictions and permit challenges. Finding a human model for the shoot was also difficult, as many declined due to social and family concerns before one agreed to participate.

Responding to concerns about animal welfare, Buruleva stated, “We used organic, locally-made paint, the same kind locals use for festivals, so it was absolutely safe for the animal.”

Despite these assurances, the photoshoot received strong backlash on social media. Critics accused her of promoting animal abuse for aesthetic purposes. One user commented, “This is not art, this is pure animal abuse,” while another said, “Creative freedom is not a free pass for irresponsible expression.” Many suggested that using digital methods like AI would have been a more ethical alternative.

Julia Buruleva’s work focuses on blending art, theater, fashion, and portraiture. However, this latest project has ignited debate over the ethical limits of creative expression involving animals.
